Initiative

Transition from paper to online testing for the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests and the South Australia Certificate of Education (SACE) exams taken by senior secondary students.

Overview

National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a national test taken by eligible students annually by students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9.

The South Australia Certificate of Education (SACE) exams, taken by Senior Secondary students, are transitioning from traditional paper-based assessments to online delivery over the next two years.

Benefits

Online assessments will reduce the time between testing and reporting, and offer more engaging test design through innovative use of technology.

NAPLAN Online is a tailored test which adapts to student responses, presenting students with questions that may be more or less difficult, resulting in better assessment and more precise results.

SACE Online assessments will allow students to take electronic exams that match the way they learn in the classroom and enable teachers to mark and moderate student work online.

2020 progress update

a technical solution for use in schools with low, no, or unreliable internet connectivity; this will be used in approximately 40% of NT schools.

There is 108 of 186 NT schools prepared to conduct online testing in May 2020, however, this testing was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

For SACE Senior Years Assessments, three online exams were delivered across 15 NT schools in 2019. These were successful, and more senior examinations will transition to online at the end of 2020.

Update June 2021

NAPLAN Online in Northern Territory schools was conducted in 2021, following NAPLAN testing being cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19. This has involved school ICT visits to ensure technical readiness.

The platform includes a solution for sites with low, no, or unreliable internet connectivity. For SACE Senior Years Assessments, eight online exams were successfully delivered across 17 NT schools in 2020. More senior examinations will transition online in 2021.
