Purpose

The purpose of this document is to outline the details and key activities of the Project Initiation Document.

Overview

The Project Initiation Document (PID) is typically developed in the initiate stage.

The PID defines, integrates, and coordinates all project management activities into a single, cohesive document.

It is the main planning document and describes how major aspects of the project will be managed and delivered.

The following provides a list of the typical contents of a PID:

  • project definition
  • project approach
  • business case details – benefits, interdependencies, costs, risks
  • project governance structure
  • role descriptions
  • project control elements
  • communication strategy including stakeholder engagement
  • project product summary/artefacts
  • project plan/schedule.
